Do You Need llms.txt for SEO and AI Search in 2026?

Does llms.txt help with Google rankings, ChatGPT visibility or AI search citations? Here is what the major platforms actually say, where llms.txt can be useful and what businesses should prioritize instead.

Do You Need llms.txt for SEO and AI Search in 2026?

Direct answer

Do you need llms.txt for SEO or AI search?

No. llms.txt is not a universal requirement for SEO or AI-search visibility. It can be used as an optional publishing convention, but it should not replace crawlable HTML, correct robots directives, useful content, clear site architecture or established structured-data practices.

01

Treat llms.txt as optional rather than foundational.

02

Crawler access and useful HTML matter independently of llms.txt.

03

Do not use llms.txt as a substitute for established technical SEO.

The short answer

You probably do not need llms.txtto improve your search visibility.

llms.txt is not an SEO ranking requirement, and it is not a requirement for appearing in Google's AI search features or ChatGPT Search.

For the broader search framework, see entity engineering and Answer Engine Optimization.

That does not make the idea useless. It makes its role much more specific.

Think of llms.txt as a possible convenience layer for systems that choose to read it — not as a visibility strategy by itself.

Adoption is nevertheless moving quickly in some parts of B2B SaaS. In Growthract's 2026 study of 100 B2B SaaS websites, 74 of 97 sites with a determinable status published an llms.txt file. That is an adoption finding, not evidence that the file causes rankings or AI citations.

Growthract view

Do not confuse making information easier for an LLM to read with making your business more likely to deserve visibility.

Accessibility matters. But useful content, strong technical foundations, clear entities and real authority still do the heavier work.

First, the definition

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file placed at the root of a website, usually at /llms.txt.

The original proposal describes it as a way to give language models concise background information and links to useful resources, particularly when a website contains more information than a model can efficiently process at once.

That makes the idea easy to understand: instead of asking a system to work out which pages matter across an entire website, you give it a curated map.

But there is an important distinction: a proposal is not the same thing as a universal crawler or search standard.

Google

Google has made its position unusually clear.

Google's current guidance for generative AI features says existing SEO fundamentals remain the foundation for visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

To be eligible as a supporting link, a page needs to be indexed, eligible to appear in Search with a snippet and compliant with the normal technical requirements.

Google also directly addresses llms.txt. Its guidance says you do not need new machine-readable AI files or special markup to appear in generative Search experiences.

Not required

Special AI files

Google does not require llms.txt or a special AI-specific file format for Search.

Still required

Search fundamentals

Crawlability, useful content, internal discovery and normal Search eligibility still matter.

ChatGPT Search

ChatGPT's published guidance focuses on crawler access.

OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search. Its publisher guidance recommends making sure OAI-SearchBot is not blocked if you want content to be discoverable and eligible for summaries, snippets and citations.

That is a different job from llms.txt.

OAI-SearchBot access determines whether OpenAI's search crawler can access relevant public content. An llms.txt file, if a system chooses to consume it, is simply an additional map of information.

01

robots.txt

Controls crawler access.

02

Website architecture

Helps important information get discovered and understood.

03

llms.txt

Optional curated context for systems that support it.

Priority

What matters more than llms.txt?

If the goal is stronger visibility across Google and AI-powered search, these are the areas we would prioritize first.

01

Be crawlable

Search and answer engines cannot reliably use content they cannot access.

02

Be understandable

Your pages should clearly explain what your business, products and expertise are about.

03

Be useful

Original, specific and genuinely helpful information matters more than adding another machine-readable file.

04

Be connected

Internal links, external references and consistent entity signals help create context around your content.

High

Crawlability and indexability

Your important pages need to be accessible before search systems can retrieve and use them.

High

Original, useful content

Google specifically recommends valuable, non-commodity content for both traditional and generative search.

High

Clear site and content architecture

Important pages should be discoverable through normal navigation and internal links.

High

Consistent business and entity information

Clear descriptions of your company, products, expertise and audience reduce ambiguity.

Medium

Structured data

Useful when it accurately represents visible content, but it is not a special AI-search shortcut.

Optional

llms.txt

Potentially useful as a curated machine-readable map for systems that choose to support it, but not a replacement for SEO or crawler access.

Decision framework

Should your website use llms.txt?

The answer depends less on SEO and more on whether a curated machine-readable index creates practical value for your type of website.

Marketing website

Low priority

A small business or B2B marketing site usually has more valuable work to do first: improve core pages, internal linking, crawlability and content quality.

Large documentation site

Worth considering

A curated index can be more useful when an LLM or agent needs to navigate a large body of technical documentation efficiently.

Developer product

Potentially useful

Products with APIs, SDKs and extensive documentation may benefit from offering a concise machine-readable guide alongside normal web navigation.

Site with weak fundamentals

Do this later

If key pages are blocked, thin, duplicated or disconnected, llms.txt does not solve the underlying visibility problem.

Example

What might an llms.txt file look like?

If you decide it is useful, keep it simple. The objective is to provide concise context and point toward authoritative resources — not reproduce your entire website.

Avoid the shortcuts

Five mistakes to avoid.

01

Treating llms.txt like a ranking factor

There is no basis for treating the presence of the file as a Google ranking signal.

02

Using it instead of robots.txt

Crawler permissions still need to be handled through the mechanisms each crawler actually supports.

03

Using it instead of a sitemap or internal links

Important pages should remain discoverable through your normal website architecture.

04

Creating an AI-only version of weak content

Reformatting thin or generic information does not turn it into useful expertise.

05

Spending hours on the file while important pages remain weak

Fix the underlying search system before optimizing optional convenience layers.

Practical checklist

Do these eight things before worrying about llms.txt.

1

Confirm important pages can be crawled and indexed.

2

Check robots.txt for Googlebot and relevant AI-search crawlers.

3

Make important content available as readable HTML text.

4

Use descriptive titles, headings and internal links.

5

Make company, product, category and audience information consistent.

6

Create original content that adds expertise, evidence or useful analysis.

7

Use structured data only when it matches visible page content.

8

Consider llms.txt only after the fundamentals are in place.

The bigger picture

AI visibility is a system,not a file.

A company becomes easier to discover when its website is technically accessible, its expertise is clearly explained, its important pages are connected and the wider web reinforces what the business is known for.

That is why we think the llms.txt debate is useful even if the file itself is optional. It forces a better question:

If an AI system tried to understand your business today, would the evidence across your website make the right answer obvious?

Frequently asked questions

llms.txt FAQs

Does llms.txt improve Google rankings?

Google says no special AI text file or machine-readable markup is required for its generative AI search features, and its current guidance specifically says llms.txt does not help or hurt visibility or rankings in Google Search.

Does Google AI Overviews use llms.txt?

Google's current documentation says Google Search does not use llms.txt. Pages instead need to meet the normal technical requirements for Search and be eligible to appear with a snippet.

Does ChatGPT require an llms.txt file?

OpenAI does not list llms.txt as a requirement for appearing in ChatGPT Search. Its publisher guidance says public websites can appear and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so content can be discovered, summarized and cited.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt controls crawler access. llms.txt is a proposed way to provide a curated, LLM-friendly overview and list of useful resources. It does not replace crawler permissions.

Should a B2B SaaS company create llms.txt?

It can be reasonable if the company maintains substantial documentation or developer resources, but it should be treated as an optional convenience layer. Strong crawlability, useful content, entity clarity and internal architecture should come first.

The takeaway

Use llms.txt if it creates utility.Do not mistake it for strategy.

If your website has extensive documentation and a concise curated index would help machines navigate it, there is little reason not to experiment with llms.txt.

But if the reason you are adding it is because someone promised it would improve rankings or make ChatGPT cite your company, your priorities are probably in the wrong order.

Start with the fundamentals: accessibility, useful information, clear entities, strong architecture and real authority. Then add optional machine-readable layers where they genuinely make the information system better.

One sentence to remember

llms.txt can make your website easier to describe to a machine. It cannot make weak information worth citing.
