Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Answer engine
A search or assistant product that returns a synthesized answer directly, rather than — or in addition to — a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are commonly cited examples.
Zero-click search
A search result or AI-generated answer where the user gets what they need directly on the results page or inside the assistant, and never clicks through to a website.
Prompt intent
The underlying question or need behind a specific prompt a user types into an AI assistant, distinct from the exact wording used to express it.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
A technique where an AI system retrieves relevant documents from an external source — often the live web — before generating its answer, rather than relying only on knowledge learned during training.
Measurement
Citation rate
How often an AI system's generated answer includes a link or explicit reference to a specific page or domain, out of the prompts tested.
Mention rate
How often a brand name appears in an AI-generated answer, whether or not that mention is accompanied by a citation link.
Share of voice (AI search)
A brand's mention or citation frequency relative to named competitors, measured across the same fixed set of prompts.
Prompt testing
Manually or programmatically running a fixed set of prompts against AI assistants to observe brand visibility, one sample at a time.
AI referral traffic
Website visits attributed to a session that arrived from an AI assistant's interface, typically identified via referrer domain or UTM parameters.
Directional data
A description applied to AI-visibility measurements to signal that they represent an observed sample at a point in time, not a guaranteed or permanent state.

Technical & entity terms
Entity
A distinct, identifiable concept — a company, product, person or place — that a search engine or AI system can recognize and disambiguate from similar concepts.
Entity clarity
How easily a website communicates who or what an entity is, using explicit, consistent language rather than vague branding a machine has to guess at.
Knowledge Graph
Google's structured database of entities and their relationships, used to inform search results and some AI-generated features.
Structured data / Schema markup
A standardized — commonly JSON-LD — format for describing a page's content and entities in a machine-readable way, most often using vocabulary from schema.org.
llms.txt
A proposed plain-text file, similar in spirit to robots.txt, intended to give AI systems a curated summary of a site's most important pages.
Crawler access
Whether an automated bot — including AI crawlers like GPTBot or PerplexityBot — is technically permitted and able to retrieve a page's content.
Server-side rendering (SSR)
Rendering a page's HTML on the server before it reaches the browser or crawler, as opposed to relying on client-side JavaScript to build the page after load.

AI Mode
Google's more conversational, chat-based search experience — a distinct surface from the AI Overviews feature embedded in classic search results.
Answer box / featured snippet
A pre-generative-AI Google search feature that displays a direct excerpt answering a query above the organic results, still active on many queries alongside newer AI features.
Topical authority
The degree to which a website is treated as a credible, comprehensive source on a given subject, typically built through consistent, in-depth coverage over time rather than a single article.

Google's Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness framework, used in its quality-rater guidelines to describe what distinguishes reliable content.
