Direct answer
What do the latest AI search and AEO statistics show for B2B SaaS?
Independent research through 2026 points to three consistent patterns: AI Overviews and AI answers now appear on a large share of search results, B2B buyers increasingly use ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini before contacting sales, and citation inside an AI answer is measured separately from classic ranking position. No single number here is a guarantee about your specific website; each is a reported figure from a named source, with its method and date attached.
01
AI answers now intercept a meaningful share of queries before a click ever reaches a website.
02
B2B software buyers are consulting AI assistants earlier in the research process than in prior years.
03
Ranking and AI citation are increasingly reported as two separate outcomes, not one.
Most "AI search statistics" roundups mix a handful of solid figures with a much larger pile of numbers nobody can trace back to an original study.
This list keeps to 15. Each one links to where it actually came from, and each one is written the way it was reported — a prediction stays a prediction, a single-survey figure stays a single-survey figure, and a number we published ourselves is labeled as ours.
How to read these numbers
Third-party AI search statistics describe what a specific study observed, at a specific time, using a specific method. They are directional signals about an industry-wide shift, not a promise about what will happen on your website. Where a figure comes from a single vendor survey or a single tracking panel, we say so.
Why these numbers matter for B2B SaaS
Three separate things are happening at once: search results pages increasingly show an AI-generated summary before any blue link, B2B software buyers are folding ChatGPT and Perplexity into their research process earlier than before, and the industry has started measuring AI citation as a distinct outcome from search ranking.
None of that requires abandoning conventional SEO. It does mean the data below is worth tracking alongside your existing rank and traffic reporting, not instead of it — a point covered in more depth in SEO vs. AEO: What Actually Changes.
Market shift
1–2. The scale of the shift
Gartner projected a 25% drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026
Gartner's February 2024 prediction attributed the decline to GenAI chatbots and virtual agents acting as substitute answer engines for queries that previously went to a search box. It was a forward-looking prediction made two years in advance, and several 2026 retrospectives argue the real-world decline has been more uneven across sectors than the headline number implied — treat it as a directional signal about where budget attention has shifted, not a literal traffic forecast for any one site.

3–6. How B2B buyers are actually using AI
Semrush surveyed 600+ US business professionals on how AI tools shape B2B buying
This is a named, methodology-disclosed survey rather than an anonymous aggregator statistic, which makes it a reasonable anchor point for the buyer-behavior claims below. Read the full breakdown before quoting any single figure out of context.
Source: Semrush, How AI Tools Shape the B2B Buying Process (2026) ↗94% of B2B buyers reported using an LLM at some point in the purchase process, per one 2026 research report
This figure comes from a single named research publisher, not a cross-industry census. It is consistent in direction with Semrush's independent survey above, which is why we include both rather than either alone.
Source: Machine Relations, B2B AI Vendor Research (2026) ↗72% of B2B software buyers reported using ChatGPT specifically to evaluate vendors
Reported by industry press covering 2026 buyer-behavior research. This narrower, ChatGPT-specific figure sits below the broader 94%-any-LLM figure above, which is the pattern you'd expect if ChatGPT is the largest but not only assistant buyers use.
Source: MarketScale, 72% of B2B Software Buyers Now Use ChatGPT to Evaluate Vendors (2026) ↗Average B2B vendor shortlists were reported to have narrowed to roughly 2 to 3 named vendors
Compiled B2B buying-statistics reporting for 2026 describes shortlists contracting compared to prior years, which raises the stakes of being one of the few vendors a buyer's AI research surfaces at all — this is the practical argument for treating AI visibility as a funnel-stage concern, not just a content experiment.

7–9. What's happening on the results page itself
AI Overviews were tracked appearing on close to half of monitored queries in 2026
One 2026 tracking study reported AI Overviews triggering on nearly 48% of tracked queries, described as a 58% year-over-year increase in prevalence. Tracking panels vary in query set and geography, so treat the exact percentage as that panel's reading rather than a universal constant.

The same 2026 tracking study reported a 34.5% click-through-rate decline for #1 rankings specifically on queries where an AI Overview appeared above the results — a reminder that rank alone no longer predicts click volume the way it once did.

Multiple 2026 trackers report cases of a page ranking first while being excluded from the AI-generated summary, and vice versa — the reason our own audits treat 'ranks well' and 'gets cited' as two different questions rather than one.

10–12. Update pace and what kept working
Google shipped three core updates in 2025 and four more updates by mid-2026
Update trackers list core updates in March, June and December 2025, followed by a Discover-only update in February 2026, a spam update and core update in March 2026, and another core update in May 2026 — a noticeably faster cadence than earlier years. A full timeline with what changed in each update is in our companion post below.

13–15. How the industry is measuring AI visibility
Structured data is common but inconsistent across B2B SaaS homepages
Our own 2026 AI Search Readiness Benchmark inspected 97 B2B SaaS homepages and found JSON-LD present in the initial HTML of 76, while SoftwareApplication schema appeared on only 21. That's an observed implementation gap at a point in time, not a claim that schema alone changes AI citation outcomes.
Source: Growthract, AI Search Readiness Benchmark 2026 ↗Independent comparisons now list five or more distinct AEO/AI-visibility platforms as the default shortlist
Named tools recurring across 2026 comparisons include Profound, Otterly.ai, Peec AI, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar — evidence that this is now a defined software category with recognizable vendors, not a single tool's marketing claim.

Across 2026 tool documentation and comparison guides, these three terms recur as the standard vocabulary for AI-visibility measurement, replacing keyword rank as the primary KPI for this category of tooling.

None of these statistics tell you whether your specific website is cited by ChatGPT, whether your traffic will follow the industry average, or whether a change you make this quarter caused a change in visibility next quarter. Aggregate, cross-industry figures and your own site's measured behavior are two different kinds of evidence.
A missing brand mention in one prompt test is an observed gap at a point in time, not proof that a system has permanently excluded you. See LLM Citation Auditing & Brand Share of Voice for how to test this on your own brand rather than relying on industry averages alone.

AI search & AEO statistics FAQs
Is the Gartner 25% search-decline statistic still accurate?
It was a February 2024 prediction for 2026 outcomes. Several 2026 retrospectives argue the realized decline has been more uneven by sector than the headline figure suggested. Cite it as "Gartner's prediction," not as a confirmed 2026 measurement.
What share of B2B buyers actually use ChatGPT to research software?
Reported figures range roughly from the low-70s to the mid-90s percent depending on whether the study asks about ChatGPT specifically or any LLM broadly, and depending on the surveyed population. Treat any single percentage as one study's reading, not a fixed industry constant.
Do these statistics mean traditional SEO no longer matters?
No. AI Overviews and assistant answers still draw heavily on indexed, crawlable, well-structured web content. The data above describes an additional layer of measurement and behavior, not a replacement for technical SEO fundamentals.
Where can I find the primary source for each statistic?
Every figure above links directly to the publisher we took it from. If a link goes stale or a publisher revises a figure, treat the update as the current source rather than the number quoted here.
